Floral Mezuzah

Traditionally, the Shema prayer inside the mezuzah is believed to watch over and protect the home. Placed on the doorway, it serves as a reminder of faith, family, tradition, and all the things that turn a house into a home.

Each mezuzah can be secured to the doorframe with small screws or nails, not included. 
Chai Modern’s mezuzahs fit a 10” and 12” scroll. The mezuzah scroll is not included.

Each of our handcrafted mezuzahs are as unique and bold as the hands that crafted it, each with its distinct African flare. As each piece is handmade, the size might vary slightly from one to the other. African Beadwork is a legacy gifted through generations, amongst the disadvantaged in South Africa – now an ever-growing community of skilled bead artists.

These artists not only have access to a creative outlet in which to express themselves, but are economically empowered through their earnings in an ongoing effort towards upliftment and independence.

Will my mezuzah discolour over time?

Our beaded mezuzahs are handcrafted using high-quality beads and are designed to be enjoyed for many years to come.
As with most white materials, the white beads may naturally develop a slight yellowish tone over time, particularly if exposed to prolonged direct sunlight or harsh environmental conditions. This is a natural ageing process and will be more noticeable on white beadwork than on darker colours.
Black beaded mezuzahs are far less likely to show any visible colour change over time.

Is my mezuzah suitable for outdoor use?

Ah, the million-dollar question!
Our beaded mezuzahs are handcrafted using traditional wire beadwork techniques, which means the beadwork is decorative rather than solid or sealed. Because of the nature of the design, rain, moisture, dust, and other elements can make their way through the beadwork and into the mezuzah case.

The real consideration isn't the mezuzah itself, it's the scroll (klaf) inside. Excessive moisture, prolonged direct sunlight, extreme heat, or cold can damage the klaf over time, potentially affecting its kosher status.
For this reason, we recommend displaying your beaded mezuzah in a sheltered location, protected from rain and direct exposure to the elements. A covered entranceway or indoor doorway is ideal.
When in doubt, choose the spot where your mezuzah, and the precious scroll inside it, will have the longest, happiest life. Our beaded mezuzahs are handcrafted works of art, and like most beautiful things, they're happiest when protected from the elements.

How do I secure my mezuzah?

Place the mezuzah on the right-hand doorpost as you enter the room
Position it in the upper third of the doorpost
Traditionally, Ashkenazi custom places the mezuzah at a slight angle, with the top tilted towards the room, Sephardi custom places it vertically
Ensure the mezuzah scroll (klaf) is inside the mezuzah case before affixing it
Attach the mezuzah securely using small screws or nails.

The Blessing:
Before securing the mezuzah, recite:
Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha'olam, Asher Kid'shanu B'mitzvotav V'tzivanu Likboa Mezuzah.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to affix a mezuzah.

Many people then gently touch the mezuzah and kiss their fingers as they pass through the doorway, a beautiful reminder of the home's Jewish identity and values.
